During the early 1900s and through World War 1, the US Navy was on the bleeding edge of radio technology. At that time radio was called wireless and was almost exclusively morse code. The SE-1420 was one of the most successful medium-wave receivers of the period, to the extent that these radios were in use until WW2 forced the military to ban regenerative receivers as their RF oscillations could be detected by the enemy.

The SE-1420 was Designed by the brilliant engineer [Louis Alan Hazeltine] (https://ethw.org/Alan_Hazeltine) while working as a consultant for the Washington Navy Yard’s radio laboratory. The mechanical design was rugged and reliable, built to the Navy’s bulletproof requirements.

This page is the evaluation criterion, not a finished writeup. It is built to break themes in the specific way that matters: inline captioned figures that must flow into body text and still expand to full size. A theme that only lightboxes its own gallery shortcode fails here, because multi-step project writeups are mostly lone figures sitting between paragraphs.

Chassis, as received

The chassis came out of storage with the usual film of shop oil on the plating. Before touching anything electrical it was photographed straight down from above, so the same frame could be repeated at the end and the before/after pair would actually line up.

The single figure above is the common case. It is one image, in its own section, and it must behave as a lone zoomable figure — not degrade into a one-item gallery with prev/next arrows pointing at nothing.

PA cage and final amplifier

The PA compartment is the part most likely to have been got at by a previous owner. The perforated screen carries the original DANGER 800 VOLTS warning, and the plate cap lead behind it is the first thing to check before applying power to anything.

Grouping matters here: this figure belongs to this section. Opening it should not let you arrow sideways into the chassis overview from the previous section, which is a different subject entirely.

Service documentation

Every component on the deck is called out by designator in the manual’s chassis plate. This is the reference used to identify which parts are period-correct and which are later repairs.

A near-square image is included on purpose. Themes that hard-assume a landscape aspect ratio will either letterbox it or crop the top and bottom off in the thumbnail.

Four crops as a contiguous block, which is the case most themes do handle. This exists to confirm the theme’s gallery still works alongside the inline figures above, and that the two do not fight each other.
